Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered to feature "Selected Soundtrack" album release enclosed in special retail edition(s)
Friday, September 17, 2021
Additional album Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness MIDI Demos released by legacy composer Peter Connelly
While the Synth Mixes approach doesn't exactly apply here, at first glance, the MIDI Demos may not strictly entail exact soundtrack material from the franchise's sixth entry. Perhaps this is for good reason, as this is advertised as an album of demos. But, most importantly, this rare collection does indeed contain unprecedented representations of material from particular stages of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003). Levels such as Le Serpent Rouge ("Le Serpent Rouge"), Storm Drains/Louvre Galleries ("Sewage Pollutant") & Strahov Fortress ("Prague Metropolis") were accompanied by electronically mixed tracks in-game. Both the pity and consolation here is that the applicable final-use cues incorporated the real-instrumentation of the Abbey Road Studios recordings, however, these "demos" are nearly indistinguishable (albeit the infamous "Le Serpent Rouge" bass doesn't quite 'slap' the same in its extended form). The electronic/orchestral mixes were strangely and entirely omitted from Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness Remastered (2019), and the MIDI Demos release begs the question - have they actually now seen the light of day?
The Dark Angel Symphony store sadly closed earlier this year, but the digital-only publication of MIDI Demos is available via all good music retailers, including streaming services and digital music stores. The crowd-funded production and historical release of the Tomb Raider: Dark Angel Symphony marked the first standalone, commercially available music by legacy Tomb Raider composer Peter Connelly. The Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness MIDI Demos joins MoTR's commercial discography catalogue and the ever-growing collection of officially sanctioned franchise albums. Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony documentary published to accompany Peter Connelly's legacy project
Following the successful re-launch of the Kickstarter-based Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony project, legacy composer Peter Connelly (The Last Revelation, Chronicles & Angel of Darkness) has published a 2-part video documentary (helmed by fellow fansite Tomb of Ash).
Connelly describes his time at Core Design and working on the original scores to the 4th, 5th & 6th main entries to the video game franchise. The composer suffered from Bell's Palsy subsequent of the stress brought on by the ups and downs of the album production.
The final crowdfunded release ultimately came to fruition in December 2019, not only featuring orchestral re-recordings and rearrangements of highlights from the composer's Tomb Raider career but also, for the first time, remastered releases of the original soundtrack albums for each title. More info at Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony.

Peter Connelly releases Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony digitally (including Tomb Raider 4/5/6 Remastered)
The Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony Kickstarter comes to fruition with the package of albums being released digitally first - today for backers and the weekend for the public via the project's "Renne's Pawnshop" online store. The crowd-funded production and historical release of the music to Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Chronicles (2000) & Angel of Darkness (2003) marks the first standalone, commercially available soundtracks by legacy Tomb Raider composer Peter Connelly.
The albums include Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony, a re-imagining of Connelly's music from across each game, as well as the original soundtracks Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation Remastered, Tomb Raider: Chronicles Remastered & Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness Remastered. The latter include previously unreleased material. The albums hit music streaming services on February 14th, 2020, and physical versions are still in production within the Kickstarter campaign.
The Dark Angel Symphony joins Nathan McCree's The Tomb Raider Suite, cataloguing music from Tomb Raiders 1 through 6, in MoTR's commercial discography. Full album track-listings after the jump below.

Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel launches on Kickstarter with £180,000 target; TWO albums announced with pledge rewards
Peter Connelly's Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel crowd-funding campaign has arrived on Kickstarter! The project follows in the footsteps of The Tomb Raider Suite by requiring an all-or-nothing backing of £180,000 by November 1st, 2018. One unfortunate aspect of 2016's The Tomb Raider Suite project is that following the fundraising, the album has yet to be released to the backers - the same pool of Tomb Raider fans will need some buttering up in order to support The Dark Angel. The successfully funded project will spawn two albums: 1) Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony & 2) Tomb Raider: Remastered.
"The core of Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony is a suite of two albums: one recorded by an 82-piece orchestra at the prestigious Air Lyndhurst Studios, London, and produced by a world-class professional team led by Dr. Richard Niles (an world-renowned orchestrator for Paul McCartney, the Pet Shop Boys, Trevor Horn and more), for the most beautiful and moving Tomb Raider sound you will ever hear. The second is for an album of Peter Connelly’s original Tomb Raider scores remastered for the highest-possible sound quality."
The primary album will consist of the re-orchestrated music from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000) & Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), while the second forms the re-mastered original soundtracks of the games - their first commercially available form in the history of the franchise. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is also set to be released in 5.1 surround sound (as an upper tier pledge reward). Other extras up for grabs include "vinyls, the full score, posters, studio attendance, rare memorabilia, and limited-edition fan-produced items like jewellery and statuettes". Support the Kickstarter here. Full reward tiers tabulated after the jump below.

Peter Connelly announces Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel
In the same vein as Nathan McCree's The Tomb Raider Suite, the Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel project aims to re-record legacy franchise composer Peter Connelly's soundtracks to Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000) & Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003). The project has been in development for over two years and is being slated for funding via Kickstarter, following The Tomb Raider Suite's success in reaching 121% of its goal.
"The album will not be a direct copy of the original Tomb Raider games’ scores, although it will remain faithful to those classic soundtracks. The music will be transformed and rearranged using techniques and personnel that were simply not available or within reach 15–20 years ago. Connelly intends to bring the musical compositions and recordings up to date and provide the listener, not only a sense of nostalgia, but with a whole new experience of this familiar and much-loved Tomb Raider music." - Press release
It should be noted that "The original versions of Connelly’s pieces will also be made available, properly remastered and beautifully presented, to tie-in with the new orchestral album so that fans can enjoy the original scores in the best possible quality" - something The Tomb Raider Suite project is yet to offer for the still unreleased soundtracks to Tomb Raider I, II & III (1996-1998) in over 20 years of the franchise.
Despite the soundtrack to Angel of Darkness having been recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2002, Connelly promises that "all of the music, TR6 included, will be re-arranged in the same way that TR4 and TR5 will be re-mastered so they're all part of the same "family". The Last Revelation & Chronicles will benefit immensely as their soundtracks were limited by the software-instrumentation technology of the times. Personnel includes masters in their field - Dr Richard Niles, Isobel Griffiths & Tomb Raider alumnus Martin Iveson.
The Kickstarter campaign launches on October 1st, and the studio album is set to be recorded and produced at the state-of-the-art Air Lyndhurst Studios in London. Formats, distribution & pledge tiers are yet to be announced, but for upcoming information please visit the Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel website.

Peter Connelly releases music track from remastered
Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness deleted "Shaman" scene
In 2013, for the 10th anniversary of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), legacy series composer Peter Connelly released a deleted scene from the game. As part of the franchise 20th anniversary celebrations, the composer has since taken the liberty of remastering the FMV by adding sound effects. An extra treat, Connelly has released the isolated music in its remastered form, downloadable via SoundCloud. Watch the updated "Shaman" deleted scene below:

Retrospective: The Arcade interviews Peter Connelly
Legacy composer Peter Connelly, responsible for helming the Tomb Raider franchise from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999) through Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), the latter a joint effort with Martin Iveson, was recently interviewed in a fascinating retrospective:
"I wasn’t forced to keep anything from Nathan’s work but I thought it would’ve been a sacrilege to disregard it so it naturally became the heart or inspiration of most of my work. Obviously, I wanted to put my own stamp on things, as anyone would, which I did, but, as long as I held onto the authenticity of the original music, I knew I was onto a winner as Nathan’s music was already tried, tested and working beautifully within the franchise." - Peter Connelly
Connelly's predecessor, Nathan McCree, is set to release re-recordings of his music presented as The Tomb Raider Suite. When asked if Connelly would consider pursuing a similar project, he replied "Yes. I have a lot of these ideas playing around in my head and they need releasing". Also as part of the Tomb Raider 20th Anniversary, the full interview with Peter Connelly is available at The Arcade.

Peter Connelly plans re-recordings & merchandise for Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Chronicles & Angel of Darkness
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Chronicles (2000) & The Angel of Darkness (2003) composer Peter Connelly has indicated plans to turn to Kickstarter funding for a fresh rehash of his work on the titles, as well as the commercial release of his original Tomb Raider 4, 5 & 6 soundtracks:
"I have plans... BIG PLANS... plans to set up a Kickstarter project to help fund a remake of my Tomb Raider 4 - The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider 5 - Chronicles and, with the help and / or blessing of Martin Iveson (AOD co-writer), Tomb Raider 6 - Angel of Darkness OSTs. The production will be huge and the merchandise available will be a something to pledge for..."
Pledge-dependent merchandise to follow could include digital soundtrack downloads, limited edition signed CD box sets (including both the original soundtracks and planned re-recordings), the 5.1 surround-sound Angel of Darkness soundtrack on DVD, vinyl releases and accompanying musical score on sheet to boot.
Details should follow Connelly jumping through legality hoops - but the serious intentions of the project have been intimated. If successful, the composer will be making the first standalone purchasable soundtrack releases for aforementioned titles in over a decade. With fellow classic Tomb Raider composer Nathan McCree also set to make big announcement(s), 2015 is turning out to be particularly sonorous.

Erudite reviews from dedicated Tomb Raider music fan: Dexter
Tomb Raider music fan Dexter Void has written thorough reviews on the music to Tomb Raider (1996) through Anniversary (2007). The Tumblr author claims to have little musical knowledge, and instead takes a fresh instinctual stance to explain their passion for the music of Tomb Raider:
"...this will remain the classic it always has done. It is so pure in its approach and naivety. Little did the creators know what they would unleash upon the undiscerning world. This, in turn is the definitive Tomb Raider experience. The music certainly lends itself to propelling it to that level of superiority." - Dexter Void, on Nathan McCree's original Tomb Raider
Dexter has included personalised and reordered track names for each title's base material reviewed. Articles for Tomb Raider: Underworld & Tomb Raider (2013) have yet to be published, but read each full review currently available at the links below:

"Monstrum Chronicles" novelist inspired by Angel of Darkness
The Monstrum Chronicles writer Katherine Silva treats Tomb Raider music fans today with an article reminiscing on Peter Connelly's music to Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Silva, author of the dark and mysterious The Monstrum Chronicles novel series, first published in 2010, cites Connelly's music as a great source of inspiration for her creative writing process:
"Peter Connelly and Martin Iveson’s engaging score for this game is one that I have gone back to time and time again while working on books. There’s this ominous undercurrent of menace that runs through each piece. These songs have proved invaluable while writing my horror series, The Monstrum Chronicles, as well as other books that I’ve worked on in the past. " - Katherine Silva
The author also details four specific tracks and what scenes she makes out from listening to them. The audio accompaniments are derived from none other than MoTR's community developed "Deluxe Edition" soundtrack to Angel of Darkness. Full article via The Monstrum Chronicles.

Poll Results: which Tomb Raider soundtrack would you most like to see commercialised?
Pushing the poll was still a relevant concern today; no Tomb Raider video game soundtrack has ever seen its own music industry release. Many samplers have been included under enclosure in special and collector's editions of the games or as various promotional items, but one cannot walk into the local CD store or browse an online music service and purchase a classic or second-continuation Tomb Raider video game score.
The results are as follows (click to enlarge):
Tomb Raider (2013) was a clear winner, included in a wopping 41% of votes. Anticipation is surely on this title's side, however, the composer responsible for the various snippets heard in promotional media is still to be named. The long-time musically acknowledged Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003) is runner up, collecting a 30% appeal in votes. The sixth Tomb Raider's classic score is composed by Peter Connelly and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Troels Folmann's fresh and electronic Tomb Raider: Legend soundtrack as well as Nathan McCree's original Tomb Raider (1996) score were also included in a significant proportion of votes (25% and 24% respectively).
Fans will be pleased to know that Tomb Raider (2013) is at the very least seeing an enclosed soundtrack release in the recently announced "Survivor" and collector's editions of the game. Global brand director Karl Stewart is confident an album will make its way to iTunes as well, and shares the concern that no Tomb Raider soundtrack is currently available on the service.
Thank you to everybody who voted! There were a total of 243 collective multi-choice votes cast (so don't worry if the percentage sums are confusing you). Suggestions for a new poll topic related to the Music of Tomb Raider are most welcome (please post a comment below!).

10th Anniversary of Connelly's Angel of Darkness score
- rarity "Paris Intro" added to Abbey Road Recordings
The 18th of July marks the 10th Anniversary of the day that composer Peter Connelly had the pleasure of recording his music to 2003's Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness with the London Symphony Orchestra, this day in 2002. Connelly's website Universal Design offers a statement from the composer:
"Although it only feels like yesterday, it was 10 years TODAY (18.07.2002) that the soundtrack to Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness was performed by the highly acclaimed London Symphony Orchestra and recorded in the beautiful sounding Studio 1 at Abbey Road Studios, London (UK). It was mixed the following day (19.07.2002) by Pete Cobbin (credited as mix engineer on Prometheus, The Kings Speech, Bridget Jones, Lord of the Rings) who was also responsible for the actual recording.
As a celebration for this 10 year anniversary, I will upload all of the original music mixes, as supplied by Abbey Road, in .wav format to my soundcloud page later today." - PC
Additionally, the album Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness - Original Abbey Road Mixes (2002), updated in high quality WAV format, now includes a 32nd track ; the rare "Paris Intro".
About "Paris Intro": Never before heard in its isolated form, the version of this cue that appears during the opening cinematic for the game is layered with another mock-up/synthesizer version, as Connelly deemed the LSO version weak and uninspiring by itself - a "rushed" piece. It was for this reason that it was not included in the initial release of Abbey Road Mixes.

Peter Connelly elaborates on recent TR releases
Following this month's release of the complete Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation Soundtrack and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness - Original Abbey Road Mixes by latter classics composer Peter Connelly, the talented Englishman has spoken exclusively to MoTR about the content of the packages:
"The TRAOD recordings are the contents of the CD burnt at the end of the recording / mix session at Abbey Road studios in 2002. I have this original Abbey Road CD. No edits, no post-pro, mastering, no nothing has been done to these files. They are exactly as received... The actual game edits of the LSO recordings and other soundtracks are plastered all over the internet so I wanted to make this release unique.
The TR4 music has been copied direct from my TR4 working folders... These are the EXACT files used to compile the audio for the final game, although they would've been named differently for the game CD (in an order for the programmers to trigger). I renamed them to be a little more obvious and consistent for the Soundcloud upload... Other than that, they're what I used for the actual game.
The FMV / Cutscene music is unique in the sense that they have not before been released without being embedded into the sound effects... The only tracks not used, that I can remember, are Music_FMV_Intro_Part01_Alternative and, possibly, Music_Cutscene_Horus_v01... I think Music_Cutscene_Horus_v02 was the one used in the cutscene." - PC
Connelly also emphasises the importance of SoundCloud - it not only provides the ability to publicise his music (encompassing his entire career, not just Tomb Raider) but also utilises the service as a digital backup of his work. Feel free to explore his portfolio @ Soundcloud: Peter Conz Connelly and further:

Peter has intimated that a similar Tomb Raider: Chronicles soundtrack release is pending - SoundCloud's storage restrictions must first be manoeuvred.

Connelly releases "Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness - Original Abbey Road Mixes"
Today Tomb Raider classics composer Peter Connelly has released a 31 track album entitled "Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness - Original Abbey Road Mixes (2002)". The downloadable package includes rare and unreleased material in MP3 format at 320kbps. In the words of the man himself:
"No game rips here!!! These are the raw and untouched final mixes direct from Abbey Road studios. Music written by Peter Connelly / Martin Iveson. Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, June 2002." - PC
Various takes of the same cues that do not appear in game are present, and cut-scene scores that until now have remained rarities also make an appearance.
Follow this fetching link for collection via his soundcloud! Thanks to TudorTulok for the heads up.
Update 18th July 2012: A 32nd track, "Paris Intro FMV", has been added to the SoundCloud release. This marks the 10th anniversary of the recording sessions.

Rarity #3: AOD's complete introduction music
A large portion of TRAOD's score was officially released under enclosure - purchasable within a limited window of opportunity alongside the region-variant collector's editions of the game. The identical material was provided either on DVD (amongst other content) or in a standalone and promotional audio CD format. Details will be available soon in our commercial discography catalogue.
However, as with any conventional soundtrack release, material is missing. And especially attributed to the Tomb Raider soundtracks, a commonly absent entity is a musical cue that accompanies a cut-scene. Surprisingly, this particular rarity actually opens Angel of Darkness (during the "chase" cinematic), so it's rare status is of a higher degree. While parts of the video's music is accounted for (and the footage below is cut down to reflect this) - simply re-used pieces that also feature in-game - a lengthy and dramatic piece from 0:44 seconds onwards is entirely unobtainable in it's raw form:
A unique and specific score to the chase scene, as an unusually dishevelled Croft escapes French police dogs in an urban alleyway, the piece incorporates a variation of the original Tomb Raider motif (heard from 1:13) composed by Nathan McCree in 1996 - for the first time in film-like fashion. Also unaccounted for, the first 20 seconds of music features in several cut-scenes throughout the game. Ignore 0:20 to 0:44; this music is obtainable via our soon-to-be-detailed community developed soundtracks - it plays during the fight with Brother Obscura in the Tomb of Ancients and thus exists in the program files. While not shown, the beginning and the end of this introduction cinematic feature similarly acquirable tracks.
Update: With the release of Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness- Original Abbey Road Mixes, the music from 0:20-0:44 is now accounted for; it is a snippet from the recording known as "The Search for Ekhardt". 18 July 2012: Additionally, the "Paris Intro FMV" was released today. This entire Rarity is now accounted for.

Retrospective: Tomb Raider Medley at Video Games Live
Video Games Live is completely dedicated to this particular expression of art, with the sole purpose of supporting and promoting videogames and all the work involved in making them a reality. The concert has spanned more than ten countries over the last six years, and is currently touring Brazil before returning to North America.

Promotional Video Games Live artwork
A "Tomb Raider Medley" was featured throughout the first presentations of Video Games Live. Not only that, but as you can see above, Lara Croft featured in some of the promotional artwork used to promote the concert. The roster of franchises represented in concert is always expanding and, unfortunately, Tomb Raider hasn't been part of the mix during recent events. You can, however, listen to one of the Tomb Raider performances in this fan made recording. The minds behind the show see fan recordings as an extra advertisement for the show (quite effective, might I add), and no doubt this particular segment of the show was magical to any attending Tomb Raider fans.
Any fan should be able to identify the performed songs, covering Nathan McCree's compositions for Tomb Raider (1996) and Tomb Raider II (1997). While it's not featured in the video above, the medley finishes with Peter Connelly's theme for Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003).
We all certainly would love to listen and watch this amazing performance in a professional fashion. Truth be told, there are two commercial releases available for purchase from the official website, but sadly, neither of them feature the "Tomb Raider Medley". Here's hoping that the upcoming Tomb Raider (2012) soundtrack will bring the franchise back to their top priorities for future concerts!

Elfman/Zimmer's recycled film music in AOD trailer score
Academy-award-winning Danny Elfman has been writing music for almost 40 years. His works include the renowned television theme to The Simpsons and the soundtrack to Wanted (2008), starring our very own Angelina Jolie. Elfman's discography also houses 25 years of scoring classic Tim Burton films, such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992) & The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).
Phenomenal film (and recently video game) composer Hans Zimmer is known for reusing his motif's across works. The Inception (2010) score writer is responsible for a particularly notable tune that stems from the motion picture Drop Zone (1994), with variations through to Gladiator (2000) & more recently the Pirates of the Caribbean quadrilogy (2003-11).
Three of these prodigies' pieces were concatenated for a promotional trailer showcasing Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003):
The first is the introduction from "Ape Suite #1", present on Elfman's Planet of the Apes: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2001) - another Burton collaboration:
The pace is then quickened with an excerpt from Zimmer's "Too Many Notes/Not Enough Rest", borrowed from 1994's Drop Zone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, before finishing with "After The Dub" from the same album.
Each of these pieces are readily available worldwide on the iTunes Music Store. The Angel of Darkness trailer in mention is available on the Tomb Raider: Anniversary [Collector's Edition] Bonus DVD.
Thanks to MariaCroft @ YouTube for their involvement in this investigation!

Two RaiderFest 2011 entries surface online
Prominent Tomb Raider fan-tribute composer Marcus Trogen is amongst the panel of judges. If you though it couldn't get any more serious; there's either an "Art of Tomb Raider" hardback (valued at $175) or a 12" Indy Sideshow Collectibles Figurine for the 1st place winner to chew their fingernails over.
It is surprising then that as of yet, there are few entries to be found upon the vast internet. If you're still considering making a submission (the competition is open until August 22nd), here's a taste of what you are up against:
The first is a beautiful piano performance by Matt L. from YouTube, reiterating Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness's main theme by Peter Connelly in their own interpretation. This smooth concoction includes an interesting variant, filled with staccato and arpeggios.
The second is a more electronic piece; a witty remix of layered material from Tomb Raider: Legend & Underworld, composed by Troels Brun Folmann & Colin O'Malley. It finishes with Mike Peaslee's combat soundtrack from Lara's Shadow, intertwined with Nathan McCree's original Tomb Raider motif from 1996.
If you'd like to share your currently unpublicised RaiderFest entry with us online, feel free to drop us a comment below.

Tomb Raider music "mashed-up" by thatnorskchick
The mash-up consists of three Tomb Raider pieces; the percussion taken from Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008), composed by Colin O'Malley, the orchestrated strings present are used in Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), composed by Peter Connelly and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, plus you might also be able to hear samples of the Tomb Raider: Legend theme composed by BAFTA-award-winning Troels Brun Folmann.
