Ah you have misunderstood. The re-recorded/remastered soundtracks I am releasing have nothing to do with the remastered games which Aspyr are releasing. I do not know what their plans are for the music/audio in the Remastered Games. I have nothing to do with that.
— Nathan McCree (@nrpmccree) January 18, 2024

There has been no official word on how the games' existing music may be considered in this trilogy of remasters, as with other contemporary re-releases featuring full re-orchestrations (e.g. Halo Anniversaries or Age of Empires Definitive Editions) or at minimum a remastering process of the audio. MoTR did however receive a press preview copy of the game(s) and can confirm following embargo(s) today that the original soundtracks are indeed intact (and, if anything, tidied up a little).

Aside, McCree, following numerous mentions over the years, reportedly still plans to finally release remastered soundtrack albums for each of the original games. This, separately, could be as soon as this month. Again, however, this material will not feature in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. This is an unequivocal missed opportunity, not only for the presentation of the music in these modernised releases, but also in the interest of preservation.

My release is a new recording, using the original MIDI files i created back in '96 with the same synths I used back then. The new recordings have been newly mixed and mastered at 96kHz 24bit. The musical content is unchanged. And I've isolated the music from the video sequences.
— Nathan McCree (@nrpmccree) January 19, 2024

To date, none of the original music tracks from McCree's Tomb Raider games have been published officially in a dedicated standalone capacity. Including, as the composer alludes, score to the cutscenes and FMV sequences in its isolated form. McCree procured the rights prior to a 2017 Kickstarter, which ultimately resulted in the Tomb Raider Suite (2018) material medleys & the accompanying Synth Mixes (2021), the latter being the closest representation to original soundtrack albums - these being promised in original stretch goals.

Conversely, Peter Connelly (Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Chronicles & Angel of Darkness) followed suit in 2019 with The Dark Angel Symphony project (& accompanying MIDI Demos in 2021) which actually featured the original soundtracks to his titles remastered. As soon as the Tomb Raider I-III original soundtracks see the light of day, MoTR will be sure to include these in our commercial discography catalogue.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298424842130765234.post-67822072680047824892022-10-07T00:00:00.215-07:002024-02-12T05:51:24.376-08:00Alan Silvestri's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life original score receives re-release "Deluxe Edition" treatment

Varese Sarabande provides Tomb Raider and film score fans with an unexpected expanded catalogue release of Alan Silvestri's original score to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life. Nearly 20 years later, the 2003 film and its 2001 predecessor starring Angelina Jolie do have quite the cult following. Four respective soundtrack albums were previously released, two alongside each film, being both original scores and various artist feature compilations.

The "Deluxe Edition" album includes approximately thirty minutes of unreleased music, more-or-less constituting an unprecedented complete score release for the franchise's second film entry. This album is immediately available across all streaming and digital music platforms, which is unusual for such a niche project, as well as a limited edition physical 2-CD run consisting of 2000 copies only. The latter collectible is out on October 28th, 2022, available to pre-order at Varese Sarabande today.

MoTR of course has secured a copy for archiving and the album is published in our Commercial Discography. Full tracklist supplied after the jump below - we've taken the liberty of highlighting the previously unreleased material. Notably, Craig Armstrong's "Lab Scene" has been included as track 14 "She Escaped - Break In". This may or may not be as previously suspected an ultimately unused, Silvestri-embellished version of the piece, regardless, Armstrong goes conspicuously uncredited. "Shoot Her Between The Eyes" appears to be the Silvestri substitute, denoted here as ultimately unused in the final film.

Both Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) & Cradle of Life (2003) are notorious for having hired composers at very late stages of production. Silvestri, according to the DVD featurettes, famously borrowed and varied Nathan McCree's original Tomb Raider video game motif for the second film. Following expansion of the hour-long album of 2003, new liner notes from Silvestri himself are included in the 2022 Deluxe Edition - issued to those first lucky two-thousand owners.

The Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness MIDI Demos is released by composer Peter Connelly today, being the fifth (5th!) album within the Dark Angel Symphony project. MIDI Demos contains an eclectic mix of musical instrument digital interface versions of previously released material, demos for ultimately unused cues, plus previously unreleased electronic in-game score. The collection is also hot off the heels of the Tomb Raider Suite: Synth Mixes, published by Nathan McCree last month, which instead aimed to embody the Playstation-era timbre with authentic sound reciprocation of the original titles.

While the Synth Mixes approach doesn't exactly apply here, at first glance, the MIDI Demos may not strictly entail exact soundtrack material from the franchise's sixth entry. Perhaps this is for good reason, as this is advertised as an album of demos. But, most importantly, this rare collection does indeed contain unprecedented representations of material from particular stages of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003). Levels such as Le Serpent Rouge ("Le Serpent Rouge"), Storm Drains/Louvre Galleries ("Sewage Pollutant") & Strahov Fortress ("Prague Metropolis") were accompanied by electronically mixed tracks in-game. Both the pity and consolation here is that the applicable final-use cues incorporated the real-instrumentation of the Abbey Road Studios recordings, however, these "demos" are nearly indistinguishable (albeit the infamous "Le Serpent Rouge" bass doesn't quite 'slap' the same in its extended form). The electronic/orchestral mixes were strangely and entirely omitted from Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness Remastered (2019), and the MIDI Demos release begs the question - have they actually now seen the light of day?

The Dark Angel Symphony store sadly closed earlier this year, but the digital-only publication of MIDI Demos is available via all good music retailers, including streaming services and digital music stores. The crowd-funded production and historical release of the Tomb Raider: Dark Angel Symphony marked the first standalone, commercially available music by legacy Tomb Raider composer Peter Connelly. The Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness MIDI Demos joins MoTR's commercial discography catalogue and the ever-growing collection of officially sanctioned franchise albums. The Tomb Raider Suite: The Synth Mixes double album hits the project's digital store today and this is something to celebrate, being the closest thing ever to an album release of the original Tomb Raider (1996), Tomb Raider II (1997) & Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft (1998) soundtrack(s). The latter - the publication of the original soundtracks themselves - is still planned, according to composer Nathan McCree. This collection consists of and authentically reproduces the expanded Tomb Raider Suite (2018) material to mimic the feel and timbre of the original video game soundtracks.

Presented as the near identical Tomb Raider Suite track arrangements, the 94-minute Synth Mixes have been "lovingly recreated using 2 x Roland JV1080 synthesisers" - the exact equipment used to produce the electronic soundtracks to the original nineties classic era games starring the titular character Lara Croft. While the digital release is available in lossless quality, a physical CD and Vinyl is slated as possible, but only if demand suffices.

The crowd-funded production and historical release of the Tomb Raider Suite marked the first standalone, commercially available music by original Tomb Raider composer Nathan McCree. A world tour of the orchestral show was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but a feature documentary is still in the works.

Following the successful re-launch of the Kickstarter-based Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony project, legacy composer Peter Connelly (The Last Revelation, Chronicles & Angel of Darkness) has published a 2-part video documentary (helmed by fellow fansite Tomb of Ash).

Connelly describes his time at Core Design and working on the original scores to the 4th, 5th & 6th main entries to the video game franchise. The composer suffered from Bell's Palsy subsequent of the stress brought on by the ups and downs of the album production.

The final crowdfunded release ultimately came to fruition in December 2019, not only featuring orchestral re-recordings and rearrangements of highlights from the composer's Tomb Raider career but also, for the first time, remastered releases of the original soundtrack albums for each title. The Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony Kickstarter comes to fruition with the package of albums being released digitally first - today for backers and the weekend for the public via the project's "Renne's Pawnshop" online store. The crowd-funded production and historical release of the music to Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Chronicles (2000) & Angel of Darkness (2003) marks the first standalone, commercially available soundtracks by legacy Tomb Raider composer Peter Connelly.

The albums include Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony, a re-imagining of Connelly's music from across each game, as well as the original soundtracks Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation Remastered, Tomb Raider: Chronicles Remastered & Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness Remastered. The latter include previously unreleased material. The albums hit music streaming services on February 14th, 2020, and physical versions are still in production within the Kickstarter campaign.

The Dark Angel Symphony joins Nathan McCree's The Tomb Raider Suite, cataloguing music from Tomb Raiders 1 through 6, in MoTR's commercial discography. Brian D'Oliveira has released a standalone Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Original Soundtrack, more than a year after the title closed the reboot trilogy of the video game franchise. The album features 28 tracks, many of which are previously unreleased, and over 15 minutes of expanded material - including entries for "Lara's Dream" (a.k.a. "Croft Manor") as well as the highly sought after "San Juan Suite".

Shadow of the Tomb Raider music has been released in prior packages, being an enclosed album included with special retail editions of the game as well as "The Conceptual Album" promotional release to accompany Official Playstation Magazine #154. Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Original Soundtrack joins MoTR's catalogue as part of the Tomb Raider commercial discography.
Tomb Raider (1996), Tomb Raider II (1997) & Tomb Raider III (1998) composer Nathan McCree updates The Tomb Raider Suite Kickstarter backers this week, many of whom are still waiting for their tiered physical rewards such as deluxe tin CDs and vinyl pressings of the album. The update follows recent allegations that the 2016-funded project has financially stalled.

McCree today assures that manufacturing of vinyl and deluxe tin CDs has now been ordered. The Tomb Raider Suite album is also distributed to backers in high resolution digital formats today, including free lossless audio codec (FLAC). Available for streaming and digital download at all good music retailers, with general release of the CD album purchasable now, The Tomb Raider Suite encompasses the music of the legacy trilogy starring Lara Croft, realised for the first time with extended material as recorded by a full orchestra.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298424842130765234.post-6738468879796998442019-06-18T02:59:00.000-07:002019-07-03T05:50:17.002-07:00Allegations made by The Tomb Raider Suite ex-Production Manager include that the project has financially stalled

Following months upon months of delays to promised goods, ex-Production Manager on The Tomb Raider Suite, Tracie-Anne Swift, has published an open forum post alleging that the project has run out of money. She requests all affected backers (who have not received their pledges since the project was funded in 2017) contact her to establish the magnitude of any wrongdoing.

"The Tomb Raider Suite has no money left, it really is as simple as that. And it hasn’t had any funds for a very, very long time." - Tracie-Anne Swift

The Tomb Raider Suite Kickstarter has been updating its backers regularly over the past 2 years, detailing production delays throughout this time. Last we heard from composer Nathan McCree, all jewel CD cases had been shipped to backers. Those pledges promised deluxe tin CDs, vinyl albums and more, are still affected by manufacturing delays. The allegations subsequently leave those in waiting concerned.
The Tomb Raider Suite team including Swift, McCree & Meagan Marie

As well as lack of pledge fulfillment for some supporters, Swift alleges that for high-tier backers the San Francisco buffet event is compromised as deposit(s) made have been absorbed into the project's mismanagement and financial delays. Complaints of inappropriate conduct have also been made.

The Tomb Raider Suite exceeded its fundraising goal of £180,000 in 2016, backed by 2,615 fans. The project consists of the 2016 premiere Tomb Raider - Live In Concert, the digital album released in late 2018, a yet-to-be-released documentary film entitled Tomb Raider: Remastered as well as a promised world tour of the live show slated to kick-off in Australia.

Update, 21st June 2019: Nathan McCree has made an official response through an update on the Kickstarter platform (full post after the jump below). The allegations still stand in the original open forum.

TRANSPARENCY AND HONESTY
Posted by Nathan McCree (Creator)

The Project

When we started the Kickstarter campaign, our policy was to not only record The Tomb Raider Suite to the highest standard possible, but to ensure that the quality of merchandise and all that we offered our backers exceeded expectations.

As a result, additional musicians were brought in, an additional 3-hour session at Abbey Road was booked, all the events were filmed to have material for a documentary; and no expense was spared to ensure the Hatfield House event was an unmitigated success.

And where additional monies were required to ensure the highest quality was maintained throughout, we used both our own personal investment and the ingenuity of the people working on the project. As a result, we were able, and continue to be able, to deliver our pledge to you.

There have been considerable regrettable delays in forwarding your merchandise but this has never been because we ran out of money. Usually the delays have been caused by compliance processes which we did not know or simply because we didn’t have the manpower to move them forward any faster. The important thing to mention here is that at no point was there going to be a problem fulfilling your pledges, and as mentioned in my last update we have placed the orders on our last remaining products and are now waiting for delivery of those.

We promised you all these rewards and you will all receive them.

As for problems with postage, of the nearly 3000 packages we have sent out we have had about 30 lost, stolen or damaged. We have honoured every single item that has been reported to us damaged or missing with a new replacement. We asked if the damaged items could be returned to us, but never demanded that as a requirement to receive the replacement. The fact that only 1% of the postage was problematic is more a testimony to the excellent quality of the Royal Mail than a criticism of us. If anyone has a damaged item or has not received a reward which they should have done, then please contact me directly on the Kickstarter website, as detailed in my last update, and we will do our best to resolve that for you as quickly as we can.

Finally, we have every intention of mounting the composer buffet at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and have reconfirmed that with them only yesterday. We will be looking at possible dates in a few months and will let everyone know when tickets will be made available.

A Response – Tracie-Anne Swift

This entire situation has been a personal attack on me and the so-called problems with the handling of the Kickstarter project has been a pretext.

Tracie-Anne was a volunteer who was invaluable in helping us with both the Kickstarter campaign and the Hatfield House Composer Buffet Reception. But, as sometimes happens unfortunately in these situations, for personal reasons we fell out.

As the saying goes, “if you never heal from what hurt you, you’ll bleed on people who didn’t cut you.” I can only apologise to you, our backers, that this situation was not resolved privately.

I should stress that Tracie-Anne has not been part of this project for over a year and has no idea of the current operation of The Tomb Raider Suite. As of this update we have decided to refund Tracie-Anne, not because we want to silence her, but because she was a backer, not a supporter. [See Update 73 – “ALL GOOD THINGS IN LIFE... (Part 2)”]. If you want to read her comment it remains in the main comments section.

To close

As consistent with my previous updates, we are spending the minimum possible time engaging with negative, subversive actions, comments and ‘contributions’ to this campaign. This will be my only update in response to this matter.

Since Tracie-Anne left the project we have completed the pledges for the Digital Download, the first T-shirt run, the Jewel Case CDs, the Acrylic Logos and all paper products. We currently have the Deluxe Tin CDs and Vinyl Records on order. Our focus is now on the San Francisco Composer Buffet Reception and completing the remaining T-shirt orders. The Tomb Raider Suite is in the best possible place since we started the project and I am very proud of what we have delivered so far.

Our focus remains and has always been on fulfilling our commitments to you and that continues unabated despite any claims or accusations to the contrary.

Sincerely

Nathan.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298424842130765234.post-52752817931756356752018-10-24T18:10:00.000-07:002018-10-25T18:42:05.151-07:00The Tomb Raider Suite album to launch digitally October 26th, 2018 - theme track, album artwork & tracklisting revealed

Following numerous production delays throughout 2018, The Tomb Raider Suite album is finally seeing the light of day. Composer Nathan McCree has today released to backers of the Kickstarter-funded project their copies of the digital album, with a general (digital) release to the public this Friday October 26th. The Tomb Raider Suite will hit all good digital music retailers and streaming services.

The Tomb Raider Suite consists of re-recorded and extended material from Tomb Raider (1996), Tomb Raider II (1997) & Tomb Raider III (1998). Jessica Curry's Classic FM had the privilege of premiering "The Tomb Raider Theme" from The Tomb Raider Suite earlier this week:
The manufacturing and release of other merchandise, including the CD and Vinyl albums, are to be detailed in future updates. Peter Connelly's Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel crowd-funding campaign has arrived on Kickstarter! The project follows in the footsteps of The Tomb Raider Suite by requiring an all-or-nothing backing of £180,000 by November 1st, 2018. One unfortunate aspect of 2016's The Tomb Raider Suite project is that following the fundraising, the album has yet to be released to the backers - the same pool of Tomb Raider fans will need some buttering up in order to support The Dark Angel. The successfully funded project will spawn two albums: 1) Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony & 2) Tomb Raider: Remastered.

"The core of Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony is a suite of two albums: one recorded by an 82-piece orchestra at the prestigious Air Lyndhurst Studios, London, and produced by a world-class professional team led by Dr. Richard Niles (an world-renowned orchestrator for Paul McCartney, the Pet Shop Boys, Trevor Horn and more), for the most beautiful and moving Tomb Raider sound you will ever hear. The primary album will consist of the re-orchestrated music from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000) & Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), while the second forms the re-mastered original soundtracks of the games - their first commercially available form in the history of the franchise. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is also set to be released in 5.1 surround sound (as an upper tier pledge reward). Other extras up for grabs include "vinyls, the full score, posters, studio attendance, rare memorabilia, and limited-edition fan-produced items like jewellery and statuettes". Shadow of the Tomb Raider composer Brian D'Oliveira of La Hacienda Creative and Audio / Music director Rob Bridgett of Eidos Montreal elaborate on the sound and music of the game in the video feature above. The announcement of D'Oliveira's involvement in the upcoming franchise pillar installment alongside supporting compositions by Martin Stig Andersen precedes.

Bridgett and D’Oliveira crafted the sound and music of Shadow of the Tomb Raider over three years: "From dense jungles and bustling city hubs to terrifying tombs and underwater cenotes – the game’s rich environments come to life with an immersive and authentic audio experience". D'Oliveira even visited Mexico to collect trunk-loads of authentic instruments for his La Hacienda studio in Montreal.

D'Oliveira takes the reigns from Rise of the Tomb Raider's Bobby Tahouri and continues to incorporate the rebooted thematic motif created for Lara Croft by Jason Graves in 2013. The Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Original Game Soundtrack is to be released as enclosed in special retail editions of the game, due to hit video game retailers worldwide on September 14th, 2018.
In the same vein as Nathan McCree's The Tomb Raider Suite, the Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel project aims to re-record legacy franchise composer Peter Connelly's soundtracks to Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000) & Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003). The project has been in development for over two years and is being slated for funding via Kickstarter, following The Tomb Raider Suite's success in reaching 121% of its goal.

"The album will not be a direct copy of the original Tomb Raider games’ scores, although it will remain faithful to those classic soundtracks. The music will be transformed and rearranged using techniques and personnel that were simply not available or within reach 15–20 years ago. Connelly intends to bring the musical compositions and recordings up to date and provide the listener, not only a sense of nostalgia, but with a whole new experience of this familiar and much-loved Tomb Raider music." - Press release

It should be noted that "The original versions of Connelly’s pieces will also be made available, properly remastered and beautifully presented, to tie-in with the new orchestral album so that fans can enjoy the original scores in the best possible quality" - something The Tomb Raider Suite project is yet to offer for the still unreleased soundtracks to Tomb Raider I, II & III (1996-1998) in over 20 years of the franchise.

Despite the soundtrack to Angel of Darkness having been recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2002, Connelly promises that "all of the music, TR6 included, will be re-arranged in the same way that TR4 and TR5 will be re-mastered so they're all part of the same "family". The Last Revelation & Chronicles will benefit immensely as their soundtracks were limited by the software-instrumentation technology of the times. Personnel includes masters in their field - Dr Richard Niles, Isobel Griffiths & Tomb Raider alumnus Martin Iveson.

The Kickstarter campaign launches on October 1st, and the studio album is set to be recorded and produced at the state-of-the-art Air Lyndhurst Studios in London. Formats, distribution & pledge tiers are yet to be announced, but for upcoming information please visit the Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel website.
Following delays to a May 1st release date, last we heard The Tomb Raider Suite album was slated to arrive this month. However, composer Nathan McCree announces further delays to the project much to the dismay of Kickstarter benefactors, citing the commencement of manufacturing today. The digital download was previously indicated to be (possibly) released prior to August, however, this has also been delayed due to a lack of distribution method:

"I am very happy to tell you that we have finally gone into our manufacturing phase of the project... The artwork for the front and back covers of the Jewel Case CD, Deluxe Tin CD and Vinyl, along with the 16-page booklet, is now finalised and ready for printing... After a considerable amount of research and fact finding we now believe we have the right solution to be able to distribute the Digital Download to you all in a couple of weeks’ time. We will most likely do this via our website... To honour the support you have shown us in backing this project, we are planning on giving the Digital Download to our backers first, a couple of days before our main retail digital release." - Nathan McCree

The Tomb Raider Suite project consists of the promised album of re-recordings of further embellished material from Tomb Raider (1996), Tomb Raider II (1997) & Tomb Raider III (1998), a feature documentary Tomb Raider: Remastered as well as the Tomb Raider - Live in Concert show scheduled for its second performance ever at the London Royal Festival Hall, Monday 17th September, 2018. Full update below.

Dear Backers,

Another month has gone by, so it’s time for another Update.

Rewards

I am very happy to tell you that we have finally gone into our manufacturing phase of the project.

Printed Material

Having finalised all the artwork for the printed merchandise, the orders were placed and printing is now done. I am planning a trip to the UK very shortly to sign the posters, programmes etc and we will be shipping to you hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

T-Shirts

With all the artwork ready, we are very close to finalising the right T-shirt supplier, so those too should be printed and ready to ship within about 14 days.

Albums

The artwork for the front and back covers of the Jewel Case CD, Deluxe Tin CD and Vinyl, along with the 16-page booklet, is now finalised and ready for printing. We will be placing orders in the next day or two.

Digital Download

After a considerable amount of research and fact finding we now believe we have the right solution to be able to distribute the Digital Download to you all in a couple of weeks’ time. We will most likely do this via our website. There is still some implementation to be done, and our web-hosting service needs a bandwidth boost in order to allow us to deliver such a large amount of data in just a few days. But everything is in-hand and is coming together nicely.

To honour the support you have shown us in backing this project, we are planning on giving the Digital Download to our backers first, a couple of days before our main retail digital release, which we hope will synchronise with our first radio airplay on Classic FM in the UK.

So not long to go now folks!

The Documentary

Having filmed almost all of our material now, we are pushing forward into the next phase – editing. We still have a few more interviews to film, which will be happening over the next few weeks, but basically we can start marking and gathering all the clips we want to use in the documentary. It will take about a month to go through all the footage we have shot, and then another month to piece it together, so we hope to have our first rough edit in a couple of months’ time.

Live Shows

We are pushing into this space steadily and surely. As you know we have our next live concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Monday 17th September. We are also in negotiations for another 2 shows in Australia, one at the Sydney Opera House and one in Melbourne (venue to be confirmed). I will update you more on this when we get some solid dates. We are also pushing to get the show into China, Japan, Singapore and South Korea. Again, I will share more information on this as things unfold. Our world tour is starting to look a reality!

Stretch Goals

Some of you have been asking me about the TR1, 2 & 3 Original Soundtrack (synth mix) releases, and the synth mix release of The Tomb Raider Suite. I have not forgotten about these and I will get to them. There is some work that needs doing, but not a huge amount, so we should be able to get both these albums released a few months after our main album release this month.

Moving Forward

Recently I have been thinking about sharing more details about the inner workings of the company to those of you who may be interested. And so rather than spam all 2600+ of you, I thought about setting up a Patreon account, so those of you who want to follow the project in closer detail will be able to. Just a thought at the moment, so again as soon as there’s some movement in this area, I will let you know.

So that’s about it for now. We are nearly there everyone. Thank you all again for your patience, it is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Nathan.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298424842130765234.post-3550555411091080812018-07-31T19:14:00.000-07:002018-09-08T19:14:30.018-07:00Shadow of the Tomb Raider trailer borrows Uncharted music

Wait, the new Tomb Raider trailer music is from WHERE? 🤯 pic.twitter.com/nYTnkDqhwE
— Survivor Reborn (@Survivor_Reborn) July 31, 2018

SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER MUSIC

The Tomb Raider franchise is widely known for its genre-defining music and sound design. The latest game in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, is certainly no exception, and Eidos-Montréal has brought together a unique music team to make this one of the most exciting and compelling games in the series.

Audio and Music director, Rob Bridgett, talks us through some of the choices behind the music in the game.

“While we are staying loyal to many of the musical recipes and devices that have made the series so successful over the last 5 years, things have evolved a lot in terms of aesthetics. As Lara is in a much darker place emotionally, and a more dangerous place physically, the music needs to represent both of these things. The South American jungle and the Maya civilization both play a central role in the instrumentation of the score, and we are also reaching deeper into Lara’s emotional point-of-view.”

This leads us to the choice of the composer for the project, Brian D’Oliveira. Brian is a respected expert, researcher and performer of South American music. Together, Rob and Brian have invested countless hours collaborating on the unmistakeable sound and textures of these cultures.

Composer, Brian D’Oliveira

“Brian has a mind-blowing collection of pre-Columbian and South-American instruments, which form the basis of our authentic sound signature for the game. He has also spent a lot of time working with musicians from specific regions in South America to understand how and why the music would be performed on those instruments. It all brings a completely unique colour and authenticity to the score that I don’t think anyone will have heard anywhere else!”

As well as a vast library of instruments, the other signature Brian is known for is producing video game music that possesses emotion at its core.

“There are many different emotions that Lara goes through in this final part of the trilogy - we needed the music to convey all those feelings, from melancholy, joy, sadness, rage to pure animal aggression, and all in a way that feels natural and flows well.”

Shadow of the Tomb Raider shifts rapidly in terms of setting, action and emotion, and for a couple of sequences in the game, the team really needed a distinct sound to help drive the narrative.

Enter the composer and sound designer Martin Stig Andersen (best known for his work on Limbo and Inside). As Ambient Music Designer, his role focuses more on specific underwater scenes, where the intensity and tone shift into an unknown, almost alien feeling.

Created by Matt McConnell for Tomb Raider in 2013, the team also looked to classic sounds, like “The Instrument,” to help embellish the iconic character of Lara Croft even further.

“We wanted to bring certain elements full circle – the instrument represents something very deep about Lara’s fear, it is a deep, visceral reminder of how she first felt on Yamatai. We decided to use this in the Jungle, not as music that placed you in that location, but instead placed you inside Lara’s head. Honestly though, the instrument sounded so good, we decided to go even further and use it as a source for sound effects, so in many areas of the game the impacts and sound textures are made using the instrument.”

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available on September 14th, 2018 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC/Steam. Preorder now at TombRaider.com.
After a sell-out premiere live performance in December 2016, The Tomb Raider Suite project has scheduled a new Tomb Raider - Live In Concert show ahead of an imminent world tour announcement. The concert will be at the London Royal Festival Hall, Monday 17th September, 2018. Nathan McCree, the original Tomb Raider composer (Tomb Raider I-III), last hosted a very successful night at Hatfield House (aka Croft Manor) for the London composer buffet on April 28th, 2018, where The Tomb Raider Suite album debuted in its entirety.

Having been more-than-successful with a crowdfunded production at Abbey Road Studios, originally The Tomb Raider Suite album release was delayed due to the preparation of the San Francisco composer buffet - an event promised to certain tiered backers, to premiere the album, just as with the London equivalent. McCree previously indicated that the digital release of the album could occur prior to the physical due the disappointment surrounding this, however, today it has been announced that the American composer buffet has also been delayed to December 2018 or 2019:

"While we have been pushing to organise the San Francisco Composer Buffet Reception for the 14th July, we were determined not to delay the album any further, and as a result, we have decided to postpone that event. Hopefully close to Christmas or failing that, the early part of next year.

I’m sure you will be glad to hear that we are still on track for an August release for the album... We are still working towards releasing the Digital Download as soon as possible (and hopefully sooner than August) but there are some dependencies which are beyond our control, so again I must ask you to be patient. We are getting closer every day." - McCree

While there's been no update to determine otherwise, we could expect The Tomb Raider Suite album's indicated release date of August 1st 2018 to shift yet again. McCree has also indicated that the documentary Tomb Raider: Remastered is still in production:

"As you know we have been filming our entire project at the various stages as we go in preparation for the documentary, and this is moving into its next phase now. The footage we have so far is really great and those of you who attended the Composer Buffet Reception saw a rough edit of some of this on our big screen at Hatfield House. We plan to start editing the documentary itself in a couple of month’s time so we can start preparing for a DVD/TV release hopefully next year." - McCree
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298424842130765234.post-29754063779036144242018-06-19T21:07:00.001-07:002018-06-20T00:47:42.875-07:00Composition from Eugene Des inspired by TR: Survivor's Guilt
<param name="movie"

Classic and "resurrected" reboot Tomb Raider fan Eugene Des proves quite the maestro, having submitted the above fan tribute composition to MoTR for publication. Although composing the piece was an in-the-moment idea after seeing the film Tomb Raider (2018), the video game composer Jason Graves is a huge inspiration to Des and this piece somewhat of a dedication to the work of Graves. The resulting creation is actually Des' version of Lara's theme, set to the 2014 comics series #1 issue "Survivor's Guilt":

"[The piece is] divided [into] four parts with its jungle-vibe intro, followed by Tomb Raider main adventure melody... [then a] more intimate but strong theme [especially] for Lara’s character, with its battling woodwinds/strings and brass finally resolving as one by the end. [The] outro gives us a hint of future adventures, a destiny waiting for her..." - Eugene Des

Composer Martin Stig Andersen has been attached to the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider, if the website of the award-winning Dane is anything to go by. A seemingly unpublished node lists credentials for "TOMB RAIDER: Ambient music design (underwater) for The Shadow of the Tomb Raider". Andersen is well known in the video game music sphere for his ambient work on Limbo (2010) and Inside (2016).

We first heard music for Shadow of the Tomb Raider in March, but the composer is yet to be officially announced. The attachment of Andersen, as per his website description, does not indicate that he is involved in the capacity of main composer - there perhaps could be more than one on board, with Andersen writing supplementary music only. The thematic motif created for the rebooted series by composer Jason Graves carries over, last utilised by Bobby Tahouri in 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the eleventh pillar instalment of the Tomb Raider franchise - starring the pop-culturally iconic Lara Croft, to be released worldwide on September 14th, 2018. Owners of special retail editions are to receive a dedicated soundtrack album release to download. Following a live orchestra performance conducted by Jason Graves, Crystal Dynamics audio designers Jack Grillo & Alex Wilmer presented at the Game Developers Conference in 2014. GDC has only just published this video today, May 25th, 2018, and it's a long but fascinating watch.

Grillo opens by talking sound effects, and from timestamp 24:18, Wilmer demonstrates the implementation of music in the franchise video game reboot of Tomb Raider (2013). He elaborates in-depth on the Tomb Raider overture as created by composer Jason Graves, and how referencing this influenced the creation of in-game music suites and the dynamic micro-scoring of action scenes.

Wilmer continues by breaking down the traversal of scoring the game - from Lara Croft opening a door, to fighting in combat with triggered layers of music, even when combat is instead avoided altogether. Percussion, sparse notes and stingers accentuate every player experience, with every piece of music in the game serving a purpose. Wilmer also talks about Graves' custom-made "The Instrument".Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298424842130765234.post-53531772536381735992018-04-27T20:00:00.000-07:002018-05-14T15:12:55.238-07:00Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Original Game Soundtrack album to be released digitally as enclosed in special retail editions
